Warm, but Fuzzy Memories Made Clear
Paul | May 7, 2007While digging through the attic I discovered a clipping I had saved, and had wanted to cite on several occasions earlier.
It was from the December 1993 issue of Reason magazine (pgs 61-63) discussing the firing of physicist [tag]William Happer[/tag] from the U.S. Department of Energy for disagreeing with then-Vice President [tag]Al Gore[/tag] over [tag]global warming[/tag].
Happer had testified before the House Energy and Water Development Subcommittee on Appropriations:
“I think that there has probably been some exaggeration of the dangers of ozone and [tag]global climate change[/tag],” he said. “One of the problems with ozone is that we don’t understand how the UV-B is changing at the ground level, and what fraction of the ultraviolet light really causes cancer.”
I searched Reason’s archives but online they don’t go back to 1993. I did find this excerpt from 2004 though:
“In 1993, Princeton University physicist William Happer was fired from the Department of Energy because he disagreed with Vice President Al Gore’s views on stratospheric ozone depletion.”
Of course, now that I found Happer’s name again, a Google search turns up a number of links discussing the firing.
